Military Post Attacked by Palestinian Militants
As Israel considers its options following the attack by Palestinian militants on a military post, the Defence Minister, Amir Peretz, has warned of severe consequences if an Israeli soldier captured during the raid is harmed by the militants. Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were also killed in the assault. Three Palestinian groups, including the military wing of the Hamas movement -- now in charge of the Palestinian government -- say they worked together to carry out the operation. Israel's foreign ministry spokesman, Mark Regev, said the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, bore responsibility for the soldier's safe return:
Palestinian president Abbas has all the necessary resources required to end this crisis. He has the ability, the capability, the men on the ground to bring back this Israeli hostage. And if he does so, he'll be meeting the expectations, I think, of the international community of everyone who wants to see peace in this region. If he fails to do so, there will be a serious question as to his ability to follow through on commitments on other issues.
Speaking to the BBC, a spokesman for Hamas, Ghazi Hamad, said Hamas officials in the government were trying to find a solution despite the difficulty of the situation:
The situation here is very very complicated because people in Gaza they were surprised they are targeting civilians. You know, among the last two weeks about fourteen civilians were killed, about six kids under three years old. And you know there was something on the beach where the whole family was killed. So what do you think the feeling of people. They try to revenge and retaliate. So we cannot control these people.
